Underground Treasures - (52 minutes) -
A film directed by Philippe AXELL
Speleologists devote all their spare time and energy to this strenuous activity, which for them is more than a passion: It’s a way of life. But what drives these men and women to enter the gapping chasms, the narrow passageways, to brave the mud, the cold, the darkness?
The discovery of concretions, also called speleothems, so beautiful and fragile, could be the quest, the treasure sought by speleologists. Treasures jealously hidden in this underground world where so much remains to be discovered. But the networks and caves that remain unexplored are increasingly inaccessible. The new treasure hunters of the subterranean world rely on sophisticated, scientific reconnaissance techniques that include scuba diving. If speleology is in itself a dangerous practice, what can be said of underwater cave diving?
This film brings the viewer into the most secret cave networks of Belgium and France. It reveals the extraordinary mineral treasures that can be found in these hidden chambers and galleries. It explains that we must remain vigilant. We must guard our wondrous subterranean treasures so that they may continue, for a long time to come, to amaze and inspire the dreams of future generations of speleologists.
