SYNOPSIS

To reveal the hidden face of our planet, that is the ambition of "Journey into the Earth," by bringing the television viewer right down into the depths of the earth to discover the most beautiful and unusual wonders and life forms found there.

Since the very first studies conducted by the engineer Nagel in 1748 at the request of the Austro-Hungarian emperor, through the daring explorations of the Frenchman Edouard Alfred Martel in the latter part of the 19th Century, Europeans have played a predominant role in the discovery of the subterranean world.

This film presents the adventures of a team of speleologists who have set out to capture images that reveal to the general public the incredible forms and colors of a natural heritage that is not widely known.

What are the true origins of caves? How were they carved out of the rock? Are they all the same or, to the contrary, are they caused by a wide range of different phenomena? Can life survive and adapt in such a hostile environment?

That is what Philippe Axell and his team will try to discover throughout this voyage under ground that will bring them from the volcanic lava tubes of Lanzarote to the ice caves of Austria and from the sunken dephts of the Fontaine de Vaucluse to the most secret crystals palaces of the French Pyrenees Mountains.
